The sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta celebrate during the opening ceremonies of Greek Week 2009. As a result of several disciplinary violations by members of several Greek organizations, there will not be a Greek Week in 2010.

Greek Week has been suspended for the 2009-2010 academic year, according to an e-mail sent to fraternity and sorority members Friday, May 1 by Tim Wilkinson, director of fraternity and sorority affairs in conjunction with Derek Lutchko, president of the Interfraternity Council and Lauren Harte, president of the Panhellenic Council.

In the e-mail, Wilkinson explained that his office is working with student leaders to re-examine Greek Week after several disciplinary infractions occurred during this year's events, held April 13-17.

"Unfortunately, this year's Greek Week was marred by unacceptable behavior by several organizations and individuals. The organizations and individuals involved in these incidents have been referred for adjudication through the University discipline system. Additionally, each chapter is working with their Inter/national Headquarters to ensure appropriate internal accountability measures are taking place," Wilkinson said.

"In light of these incidents, as well as the negative impact that Greek Week has generally had on both the campus and fraternity and sorority communities in recent years, the decision has been made to suspend Greek Week for the 2009-2010 academic year. There is a clear need to re-evaluate and assess the goals, purpose and outcomes of Greek Week for the fraternity and sorority community, as well as the Lehigh Community as a whole."

Wilkinson said the office of fraternity and sorority affairs and the dean of students office will work with students and the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils to "assess all aspects of Greek Week, including its purpose, content and timing."

In a personal e-mail to the author of this story, Wilkinson said the goal will be to create an event that "represents the fraternity and sorority community in a way we could all be proud of."

Why does everyone keep hating on the Greeks?

I don't think it is fair that they are punishing next years members for the actions of this year's members. (Continued…)

The greek community really showed it's true colors this past year. Divisions between houses, sexism, and racial prejudice all reared their ugly faces. (Continued…)

Most would be amazed to learn of the noble roots in establishing today's fraternities. Having lived in a Lehigh frat house during the Animal House years of the late 1970's, I now look back and wonder how such admirable aims got lost over the course of many decades. (Continued…)

Oh great. How is Lehigh every going to get to be the number 1 party school with actions like this? Tim should also consider instituting time-outs and detention. (Continued…)

Notice that no one in greek life complained about any of the incidents that occurred during Greek Week. No one within the greek community (even those that were called out during the greek week dance) cared. (Continued…)

Well, the PC police have finally won out. Lets allow the actions of a few morons ruin the fun for everyone - now the anti-Greek legions can pounce and detroy the institution at the school forever. (Continued…)

By suppressing this sort of activity Lehigh does nothing more than foster more 'off the radar' activity, much more dangerous than public drunkenness at events. (Continued…)

I think that Lehigh's jump on the party school list has made the administration overly wary. Were those guilty of infractions part of the Greek community, or were they non-Greeks intent on ruining the Greek week festivities?

Common Sense

So the basis for suspending greek week for the coming year is the insensitive comments made by a handful of members from two or three houses. If the entire greek community is being punished for these "un-pc" remarks, than the majority of students at lehigh should be punished as well, greek or non-greek, because they are guilty of these same "crimes". We all came to this school because we heard it was the best of both worlds, strong academically with a great social life. Unfortunately, when we arrive on campus we find that only one of those two is even partially true, and even that distinction is plummeting quickly. (Continued…)
