After reading the article titled "Group explores challenges of being transgendered" in the Nov. 3, 2009 issue, I am shocked and confounded at some of the things written in this article.
I am not speaking of the theme of the article, which I too believe is an important issue for all to be aware of, but rather the context and content of the article.
This article quotes a student saying "if you are in a room of transgender men, they all look like 13-year-old boys." I mean no disrespect to the author of the quote, but to the author of the article and the editors of the newspaper.
How could a statement such as that be deemed relevant and/or accurate enough to be published in a news article?
I would also like to understand the quotation that transgender individuals are "emotionally unstable, medically unstable and sometimes even mentally unstable."
Frankly, this statement is absurd. I may not be majoring in journalism, but I sure can see the ridiculousness of publishing such a gross stereotype.
I think the editors and writers need to be more focused on writing relevant news stories with accurate information rather than working to create a voluminous issue with ludicrous and meaningless statements.
Writing an article based upon two students' experiences at a conference without any research to provide truth to the writing is not what news writing should be.
